'Maths Week'

a HA News Team Report by Harkaran M-R.

Maths week took place between the 28th November and the 2nd of December.

During this time a range of exciting events were held to encourage students to enjoy maths. Events included a world record attempt for the World's largest Maths lesson held in multiple locations! This meant that many schools in the UK had the same Maths lesson at the same time.

On the other days there were various clubs and activities that students in all year groups were invited to participate in.

As well as promoting maths, the events also helped to raise awareness of The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). This charity ensures children around the world are protected and not abused by adults or other people. The NSPCC also run Child line, a confidential helpline dedicated to children and young people. Whenever and wherever children need it; Child Line will be there for them.

In Maths week there were different activities on offer each day of the week:
·         On Monday there was a Number Day
·         On Tuesday was a Puzzles Day
·         On Wednesday was  a Tower Building Competition
·         On Thursday was a Maths Bee for the teachers
·         And on Friday there was NSPCC world record attempt

On Number Day every teacher wore a different number and students were set the challenge of collecting them. For every number students collected, students received a point. They were then given sums such as 'Dr. Demont x Mr. Edmead' or 'Mr. Barry - Mrs. Hoseason' and then for every correct sum they achieved 5 points.

At the end of the day the people with the most points won a prize!

On Wednesday there was a tower building competition in which students were set the challenge of building the highest and stable tower out of just newspapers and a roll of sellotape.

Thursday was the day of the Hampton Academy Maths Bee. This was great fun and it was great to see a competition built around maths skills.

The Maths Bee was a hard-fought competition
Maths Week was a fantastic event that we all enjoyed a lot. Students from every year group were involved and we are really thankful to the maths teachers for setting this up for us.

It was also great that Mr. Chiremba returned to school last week and we were all very pleased to see him.
