HAMPTON ACADEMY READ-AR-THON

Will Smith has just launched the Hampton Academy Read-AR-thon for all of Years 7, 8 and 9. That´s right — Will Smith, of ‘Men in Black´ and ‘I am Legend´, fame.  Why Will? — I hear you ask — well he knows the importance of reading and understands what enjoyment and success you can gain from all of those words, crammed together, inked over some bound bits of paper.

At Hampton Academy we have our own special way to encourage everyone to read — whatever their ability — and that is ‘Accelerated Reader´ (hence Read-AR-thon!!). Accelerated Reader is a programme that looks at a student´s reading capability and then points them in the direction of books or graphic novels that both challenge them, but are not too difficult.  Accelerated Reader also has a series of books that are aimed at secondary school students — not ‘Jack and Sammy went to the Zoo´ but stuff about relationships, bullying, action and fantasy.  As students use the programme to choose books, take quizzes and set goals they are able to see their progression and be rewarded for it too.

The Read-AR-thon has now begun and students can use AR to show that they have read books.  The points that they earn on AR will go towards a competition between base groups.  Sponsorship forms are coming home today — so please dig deep and sponsor your child per book.  Please see attached link for the detailed RULES OF THE READ-AR-THON.PDF (pdf, 970 kB)
