Hampton Academy Dance Showcase

On Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd February 2011 Hampton Academy witnessed its first Dance Showcase. 140 students from years 7-11 were involved in performing in the showcase which saw 26 dances based on different styles including Break dance, Contemporary, Ballet, Rock 'N' Roll, African, Street, Disco, Jazz, Indian and Michael Jackson style. All students performed fantastically and the audience were treated to a really top rate performance evening.

Dances were choreographed by myself, Miss Davidson (Dance and PE Specialist), Lee Robinson (Dance Mentor), and Kelly Bull (Dance Mentor), in collaboration with the students. However some of the dances were

choreographed by the GCSE Dance students themselves as part of their GCSE Dance course. Huge congratulations must go to Saire Dablani, Dunella King, Caroline O´Mahoney, Kerri Southall and Darren Varney in having reached this professional standard in their choreography work.

The technical aspects of the showcase were taken care of by some of the performing arts mentors and were overseen by Claire McCormack (Director of Specialism). The lighting, sound, filming and the technical aspects in their entirety were flawless, and aided the professional and smooth running of the showcase. Working alongside this professional team of technical support was Sean Chapman, a year 8 student at Hampton Academy, who through his constant support of all events in the performing arts now has a wealth of knowledge in this area. Sean was an integral part of the team and for someone so young should feel very proud of his achievements so far.

This showcase has given all the students involved a great deal of confidence, it has also acted a spring board for the year 11 students who are looking at following a professional career in dance. With a show of this calibre under their belt they will be set up well for their auditions and interviews into the top dance schools and courses.

Some of the feedback from the showcase was as follows:
“The Dance Showcase made for a remarkable evening. For sheer skill, energy and entertainment it would take some beating. The exuberance (I'm thinking especially of the end) was only matched by the amazing planning and discipline that must have been required to make it all happen." Chris Collier - Member of the Academy Council

“I just wanted to say thank you to Miss Wasley and all the team for putting on such a great dance show last night. All of it was to a brilliant standard, but I have to say that the Year 10 and 11 GCSE performances were quite superb. Engaging 140 young people is no small feat and their enthusiasm and enjoyment of the whole performance was evident throughout. The vivaciousness of the students is one of the things that really gives me a buzz about Hampton Academy, so much lively energy delivering, in this case, not just a first class performance, but demonstrating the ability to have fun along the way. I love it!" Jon Holloway - Hampton Academy parent

“My daughter is really enjoying her time here at Hampton Academy. Over the last few days leading up to the Dance Showcase she has said to me that she is “living the dream" being here. Thank you." Miss Way - Year 7 Hampton Academy parent

“The standard of the GCSE student choreographies was exceptionally high. I run a dance school and would be really interested to have Kerri Southall to come and teach her GCSE Dance choreography piece to my students." Sarah Craig - Independent Dance Teacher
