‘Footsteps in the Sand´

On Monday the Dramatic Edge summer show took place in the delightful surroundings of Orleans House Courtyard in Twickenham. Based on the theme of the great British seaside, ‘ Footsteps in the Sand´ involved 70 Year 8 students from Hampton Academy, Twickenham Academy, Grey Court, Richmond Park Academy and Lady Eleanor Holles.  Most remarkably the  piece was put together on the day!- no mean feat given the soaring temperatures!

A series of workshops on a seaside theme took place in the morning led by visiting professionals with students choosing between dance, character, physical theatre and musical theatre, culminating in 4 scenes that highlighted these skills. The emphasis was on collaborative working and it was great to see the students mixing together so easily and being creative. Indeed, at the end of the day this was highlighted as the most enjoyable aspect!

Each workshop generated piece was linked together by scenes set in the fictitious seaside town of Bishop´s Bay and performed by Actor in residence Alan  Mitchell, mentor Shiv Jalota and  Danny Morgan. These scenes told the story of the town´s renaissance based on the memories of local fish & chip shop owner Geoff Dobson, who acts as mentor to two youths, Lee and Terry, who gradually are won over by his passion and take it upon themselves to bring the town back to life.

At 2pm everything came together for the performance which was very well received. The following comments perhaps sum up the day:

‘ I enjoyed being here because I met new people and learnt new drama skills´

‘ The workshop was really fun and exciting and I met new cool people which was really exciting´

‘ The musical theatre workshop is amazing: we´ve been sailors, singers, dancers and actors!´

‘ wish you were here!- have made a new cool friend called Maya!´

....and from the parents

‘ Thoroughly enjoyed the whole afternoon- brilliant performances by all involved´.

‘It was very well put together. A fantastic opportunity for the students´.

‘ Had a great time on the beach! Everyone worked so well together´....

What could possibly follow that? Only one thing, which was ice creams for all at the end of the show! Phew!
