En Fantastisk Vecka in Sverige !

“A fantastic week" were the words used over and over again by our Year 8 students, all of the Hampton Academy staff and our Swedish colleagues after their experience at the Gamleby Learning Camp in June.

It was a unique opportunity for the students, most of them having never visited Sweden before, many having never flown in a plane before and most having not experienced a school journey which offered structured lessons that were so interesting and such great fun!

After the exciting coach and airborne journeys on the 12th June (with all students displaying excellent behaviour), things were to get so much better! At the

beautifully sited learning camp, on an inlet of the Baltic Sea, every student had the opportunity to learn silversmithing, Swedish cooking and how to make a t-shirt.  In addition, they took part in an art walk; seeing sculptures of monsters and goblins on a nearby hill which, according to Swedish folklore, was the frozen body of a huge giant.  There were also athletics and teambuilding sessions which were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who took part, including Mrs Carpenter and Mr Ovenden who surprised students in a game of “Burn" with their batting, if not their running, abilities!

Every day was busy and enjoyable for everyone.  The students´ focus during the lessons was a joy for the academy staff to see and the Swedish teachers were greatly impressed with their behaviour and  commitment in all lessons.  In fact, the students were often so engrossed in the new skills they were learning that they had to be encouraged to take breaks!  Professional quality rings and t-shirts and dishes cooked to perfection, were proudly produced by girls and boys who hadn´t believed they were capable of such things!  (A great example of the Kunskapsskolan moto of students

“learning more than they thought possible"

).

After lessons and dinner there were more activities, which included table tennis, snooker, swimming in the beautiful lagoon, fishing, volley ball and crazy golf and on the final evening the Gamleby centre staff organised a special barbecue on the beach.  The final day was spent exploring the town of Vastervik before heading to the airport; everyone tired but exhilarated and taking away some wonderful memories!

Some reports from students :

Our trip to Sweden was a fantastic experience.  We learnt loads of skills that we might need when we grow up.  We did silversmithing, cooking and textiles and the Swedish teachers were really nice at Gamleby.  The facilities were brilliant and I think we all agree it was one of the most  welcoming school trips we have been on!  We would like to thank all the teachers who took us and the Gamlebty staff for making it so good.  It was amazing and couldn´t have been any better than it was!

Sweden was the best experience ever! Every day we completed 3 x 3 hour lessons of either silver smithing or Textiles. The food was amazing and all the staff were really friendly. There were loads of activities to do after lessons; including watching films, playing football, crazy golf, volley ball and playing down in the lagoon. On Thursday the Gamleby staff brought all the food and entertainment down to the lagoon to have an amazing barbecue with them and to have a fun last night, along with Twickenham Academy. Overall this trip was amazing, I would want to go again, and I would definitely recommend it to everyone else at Hampton Academy. Thank you to everyone that made the trip so successful!

On the 12th of June, we set off to Gamleby in the South of Sweden. After a long journey and going to bed in the early hours of the morning, we woke up the next day and started our activities. Students could either do textiles or silver smithing at the learning camp where we stayed. We also did food technology and made some Swedish dishes.  We spent one morning hiking up a nearby hill and saw some amazing views of Gamleby and surrounding area and we also did some athletics and team building activities. I especially enjoyed making my silver ring in the silver smithing session. After our lessons, we were able to go to a nearby lagoon and do some activities such as fishing, swimming, mini golf, bowling and watching movies. Overall it was a fantastic trip, a great experience and we hope to return!
