On Monday 14th March, a group of five college councillors went on a visit to City Hall. We started off at 10:15 where we got the train up to Waterloo and then onto London Bridge. Here we walked along the River Thames, taking in views of The Tower of London, HMS Belfast and Tower Bridge until we reached City Hall. The building itself was built at a slant , in a slight sphere shape, made of complete glass. On entering, our bags were checked like they do at the airport on the x-ray machines and also we were scanned for dangerous items. We then had a presentation on London in which we learnt some amazing facts and history on London, such as the amount of people living in London 7.6 million compared to the whole amount living in the whole of Ireland! There are 300 different languages spoken in London and it is the 2nd most visited city in the whole world, Paris being the most popular! It will be Queen Elizabeth´s 60th year on the throne in 2012 her diamond anniversary. We talked a lot about the Olympics as there is only 500 days to go! This is also the launch of ticket sales, which is done by registering and then pulled out like a lottery. Ticket prices range from £20.12 up to £2012! We were then taken up to where ‘Boris Johnson, The Mayor of London´ takes his meetings and was even able to sit in his chair! They encouraged us to send him any of our questions or ideas on how to make London a better place to ‘mayor@london.gov.uk´ where you are guaranteed to receive a reply. |
