Lessons themed around Home

To celebrate National Poetry Day this year at Hampton Academy, we had a day of English lessons linked to this year´s theme: ‘Home´.

Home is where the heart is — and students were invited to reflect on what this means to them. Is home a house? What would their dream house look like? What sort of home does Michael Owen live in? What would it be like to live in a lighthouse? What are homes like around the world? Is it a feeling or a location?

Each teacher dressed up their classrooms with a ‘Home´ display and students discussed whether it represented their idea of home.

Following this discussion, students read some poems with their English teacher linked to the theme of home and culture, going on to produce their own ‘home´ poems. These will be published shortly.
In addition, around the school, fifty poems were placed for students to find and recite in exchange for chocolate prizes and praise stamps.

Well done to the following students who achieved this:
·         Johnny Lei
·         Kirsten Stewart
·         Jasmeen Bajwa
·         Zoe Dennison
·         Jess Boreham
·         James Thatcher
·         Charlotte Aldridge
·         Peter Hanna
·         Kate Quest
·         Ruth Mullan

It´s worth keeping an eye out for a publication of poetry (7th October) titled Forward Book of Poetry 2011. It condenses the best of current poetry into one collection.
There is also a fantastic poetry archive for students to listen to, which brings the best current poetry right into your earphones:
