A review of the Dance Show by Daniela Cassiano Dos Santos

Hampton Academy´s very first Dance Show went brilliantly and was a huge success with parents and students at the school. The Dance Show included a wide variety of dance styles from contemporary to ballet to modern to tribal and even some disco fever! It took a lot of hard work and dedication from both performers and dance teachers, that all paid off in the end.

As a year 11 performer myself, I must say that it was a lot of fun learning and choreographing our dances. But best of all was performing to an audience that appreciates all the hard work that all the performers and teachers had put in.

My favourite dance was my solo tribal dance that I expressed what I love to do and what I am good at. I love it because it

had a good rhythm and beat and very fast movements that kept the audience engaged. I got many good comments, so I guess it was a great piece too. Certainly something I feel proud of.

The backstage atmosphere was constantly filled with excitement and nerves at the same time. The excitement of getting ready then when your name or act is called to go and perform your heart just skips a beat and your stomach fills with butterflies. It was really interesting to watch the preparation and teamwork between the older performers and younger ones. Especially between quick changes, there was always someone there to help you out with either costumes, hair or make up. That helped the Dance Show to run smoothly.

The costumes and lighting were all chosen to suit each dance perfectly and helped set the mood for the dance being performed, such as the disco fever group with the different coloured afros and funky 60s trousers. The tribal dance had a yellow spot which created the ‘Lion King´ sunrise.

When I think a week back before the Dance Show, I never expected it to come and leave so quickly. It was lots of fun, and great memories were made on and off the stage. The final speech made by one of the performers made me realise that this was our very last Dance Show we would ever do as year 11 in the school and actually made me think about all the memories of previous shows we have done together. I know that I will truly miss performing at Hampton Academy but I will definitely come back next year to make sure that they keep up the high standard of dance that we, year 11 have left behind.
