Aim Higher trip to St George's University for aspiring medics

On 11th March we went on a trip to St George´s University in Tooting. It was an amazing trip; not only was it great fun but it was full of interesting stuff too!

The very first thing we did was make a prosthetic finger. Our group had a whole lab to themselves and with instructions from the Student Ambassadors of St George´s we all managed to make one exact copy of our own finger. We learned about prosthetics and the reasons why people choose to have a prosthetic limb.

Straight after that we went to a different lab where we were taught about radiology and different types of scans. We were told about the grades and work experience needed in order to pursue a career in medicine which was very useful. Everyone we talked to was very passionate about what they were studying and this made me want to study medicine even more as it definitely seemed like something I would enjoy.

After lunch it was time for Clinical Skills. This involved everything from pulses and heart sounds (which we were shown on Harvey, a model of a human body with a beating heart) to blood pressure, skeleton and hand washing. We were taught about basic first aid.

The whole day was extremely interesting and varied, we learned so much and I´ve found myself curious to find out more. It also made me realize that medicine is really the career path for me and that I need to work really hard if I want to study it.

Overall it was a great experience and one of the most enjoyable school trips I´ve been on so far. The Student Ambassadors answered all of our questions, as well as any questions our teachers had. I would love to go to St George´s again and I think it was a great opportunity to learn about the responsibilities of being a doctor.
