AUTHORISED ABSENCE

A student's absence may be authorised if:
  • the student is ill
  • the student is prevented from attending by an unavoidable cause e.g. bereavement, breakdown of public transport
  • the absence occurs on a day set aside for religious observance by the religion to which the student´s parents belong
  • the student has a medical appointment or an interview approved by the academy
  • the student is taking part in approved work experience
  • the student is attending a significant family occasion e.g. wedding or funeral of immediate family member*
  • the student is excluded

UNAUTHORISED ABSENCE

A student´s absence will not be authorised if:
  • the student arrives after the register has closed at 9.30am
  • the student is minding the house/looking after young children or other relatives
  • the student is shopping during the school day
  • the student is celebrating a non-religious special occasion such as a birthday
  • the student takes further time off following a medical appointment or interview
  • the student is absent from a work experience location without good reason
  • the student is on a family holiday UNLESS there are exceptional compassionate circumstances*
  • the student´s attendance is persistently below 85% and has been referred to the multi-agency team

*in these circumstances the parent must request leave of absence in writing to the Principal and receive a written response

EXTENDED LEAVE OF ABSENCE

This may be granted by the Principal in exceptional circumstances to allow students to maintain contact with their family overseas. A maximum of four weeks´ leave is allowed and the return date must be confirmed in advance of the leave being granted. If a student does not return by the agreed date and contact is not maintained with the academy, the student´s name will be removed from the academy roll and the parent/ carer notified at their last confirmed address. If the student subsequently returns, they may reapply for a place at the academy through the normal mid-term admissions process.
