Spelling Bee Hampton

For the first year ever, Hampton Academy had its very own Spelling Bee Championships. It was a Championship with a twist though as teachers and staff took to the stage instead of students.

The four objectives of the event were to
1.       Promote literacy across the curriculum;
2.       Act as role models for the students;
3.       Raise money for our partner school, Mivokuni, in Kenya (students and staff helped to raise over £200 for a very worthy cause!);
4.       Have fun

The event took place over three lunch times and students loved it! The first lunch break was a team event with teachers divided up into teams with Kenyan names. The next two lunch breaks consisted of the ‘sudden death´ round: one word spelt wrong and the teachers were out. There were some very tricky words such as ‘Pterodactyl´ and ‘Hannukkah´ which tripped brave teacher s up.

It was a thrilling and exciting event with students desperate to see which teacher would win. There was also an opportunity for students to demonstrate their spelling prowess as they were called up to the stage to pick words from an envelope contributed by other base groups.

The team winners were: Mr Hazeltine, Ms McMahon and Ms Forrester.
The winning teacher was Mr Humphreys who walked away with the 2011 trophy.
Next year, we are going to turn the tables again so that students will be in the spotlight, with teachers going along to support them. Hope to see many of you there!
