John Hegley visits Hampton Academy

On Tuesday 5th April, Hampton Academy was honoured to receive a visit from the renowned poet and performer, John Hegley who read a selection of his work in a special assembly for Year 7 students. The poet gave entertaining performances of poems on subjects ranging from guillemots to flatulent family pets, all delivered in his unimitable style.  The audience particularly enjoyed his unique rendition of ‘Max (likes to be with people but people don´t like to be with Max)´ from his collection of poems entitled ‘My Dog is a Carrot´ which featured accompaniment on the mandolin (named Steve) and some unique dance moves!

A number of students later took part in workshops, led by John Hegley, in which they explored ideas for writing poetry and were encouraged to have fun with language. Those who took part found the workshops both entertaining and inspirational and our guest was impressed by the imaginative work they produced.

After the workshops, Rachel and Sophie from Wordsworth college interviewed the poet for HAtv:  http://www.youtube.com/user/HamptonAcademy?feature=mhum#p/a/u/0/miZLNu9j7VM
