Yr 11 Art and Textiles Trip:

Tate Britain

On Thursday 2 February, Hampton Academy Year 11 Art and Textiles students visited Tate Britain to begin preparing for their final exam in April.

Students were set the task of researching, recording and sketching from a variety of visual images and art forms in connection with the exam starting point, ‘Ordinary and/or Extraordinary´.

The day was a bitingly chilly one (!), however students braved the elements to ensure they could get a head start on their art exam preparation. All in all the day was an extremely productive one.

Students were an absolute credit to Hampton Academy and it was a pleasure, as the new APL for Art, to spend time getting to know students, and to observe their enthusiasm for the subject.

‘Today at Tate Britain we learned about new artists and how they express/ed their love for visual Art in a variety of ways.

The Gallery was split up into different periods and themes. The period with the best art was the 18th Century Gallery.  This is because the paintings displayed are expressed with great detail, passion and emotion.  One of our highlights was John Everitt Millais, ‘Ophelia´.  It shows the elegance and subtleness of the woman floating in the water amid colours which really suit the mood of the picture.

Overall the day has been very inspirational and helpful toward our own work.  It has been a successful day and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We would definitely visit Tate Britain again.´

‘Today we went to Tate Britain in London.  We saw many paintings in the Gallery.  As soon as we entered there were sculptures, and also modern art which consisted of video, installations and abstract models/paintings — These were most appealing to us, because they stood out and were ‘extraordinary´.  We also sketched paintings and sculptures by a variety of artists.´

‘ Today we visited Tate Britain.  There we roamed around to examine the art on display.  It was a great chance to find inspiration and ideas for our own work as well as a general insight into a wide variety of arts and culture.´
