The Hampton Academy Orchestra were taken through the front gates of Buckingham Palace to watch the famous Changing of the Guard Ceremony the week before half term. This exciting opportunity came about because we were invited as guests of the Irish Guards Band, with whom the Academy have established a link partnership.
The day started off with the students at Wellington Barracks where the guards are based. They were given an explanation of the Bands role and career opportunities. Then they met with the band had some photos with them and tried on the big bear skin hats!
Then they were escorted round to Buckingham palace by Sergeant John Hooper and in front of hundreds of on looking tourists the gates were opened and the orchestra were escorted by John to the front of the palace building. The Guards Band paraded round to the front of the palace and treated the huge crowd to an excellent version of ‘It´s not unusual´ originally by Tom Jones.
The Orchestra finished off their visit having a look round the Guards Museum and Chapel. It was a very interesting experience and the students took with them memories that will last a long time.
