Dance Auditionby Nikita Janagol
In July 2011, Myself and seven other students participated in a mock audition organised by Lee and Daniela (Dance Mentors at Hampton Academy) to prepare us for future dance auditions.
Throughout the 2 hour audition we would experience what happens and how the audition judge would act like. Lee taught us what we would learn and Daniela sat at a desk and reviewed the entire session, focusing on our performances. When we arrived a number was pinned to the back and front of our clothing. We then wrote our name on a piece of paper next to the number we were wearing. The session began with a warm-up: jumping and moving around the studio. We did some other stretches to warm-up the body in all places too. After this we did a mini dance piece which was very challenging. I liked that because I could push myself as much as I could to show that I could pull through, if I really tried and that I had determination. Then we did a dance to a fast piece of music. This was mostly done on the spot but moving down to the floor and up again. The audition continued when auditionees were asked to complete a traveling exercise with spins and jumps making each movement as clear as possible because this activity was done in pairs. This was repeated a few times, rotating partners every time. Then we were put into groups of 2 or 3 and had to base a mini sequence on a poem given to us. We had to represent the lines as clearly as possible not going off track. Finally, we received constructive feedback from Lee about the audition and reflected on the event. We were also each given a report of our performance in order to help us make improvements for any future auditions. |
